Where Design Meets the Atlantic: The Ardna Sauna

On the far western edge of the Scottish mainland, where the Ardnamurchan Peninsula meets the Atlantic, the Ardna Sauna sits quietly in the landscape. Surrounded by heather, shifting skies, and the constant presence of the sea, it feels settled and composed, shaped as much by its environment as by its design.

Ardna is a compact structure, designed to sit low and recede rather than announce itself. Its form is restrained, confident, and deliberately understated. The living sedum roof is the defining element: a soft, evolving surface that anchors the building to the land and allows it to change subtly with the seasons.

The sauna was designed and built by Doon, a Scottish design-led studio founded by brothers Finlay and Oliver Bendit. Their work is guided by a simple intention: to design and build outdoor structures properly. Quality, careful detailing, and long-term performance shape every decision, particularly in exposed and demanding environments like this.

Inside, the space feels warm and cocooned. Thermally modified alder lines the walls, holding heat gently and glowing in the light of the stove. A wood-fired heater delivers a dry, enveloping heat, while 100% British sheep’s wool insulation helps regulate temperature and allows the structure to breathe naturally. Designed as an intimate two-person sauna, the space encourages unhurried use, whether that’s conversation, quiet reflection, or watching weather roll in from the west.

Externally, the building responds to the Atlantic climate with resilience and restraint. FSC-certified Scottish larch cladding is left untreated to weather naturally into a silvery grey, echoing the surrounding rock, sea, and sky. The structure is positioned on large stone boulders and secured with stainless steel fixings and ground screws, all specified to withstand salt air, heavy rain, and long winters.

Ardna is more than a sauna. It is a small structure shaped by place, where landscape, climate, and use are inseparable from the design. Whether following a cold-water swim or a long walk along the coast, the sauna offers a moment of stillness overlooking the Atlantic.

Quiet, deliberate, and built for long-term use, Ardna reflects Doon’s approach in its purest form: permanent structures designed to sit comfortably in the landscape and perform reliably over time.
