Modern sauna culture is often focused on optimisation. Hotter sessions, colder plunges, longer holds, more data. Somewhere along the way, the simple purpose of heat was lost.

At Doon, we design saunas to remove the noise. No gimmicks, no screens, no systems to manage. Just calm, solid structures that hold heat, shelter you from the weather, and create space to slow down.

Performance

The secrets to a good sauna


  • A sauna is a demanding environment. High heat and humidity quickly expose weaknesses in materials, fixings, and construction methods.

    For that reason, our outdoor saunas are designed using clean, stable materials chosen specifically for high-temperature spaces. We avoid glues, resins, and synthetic binders inside the sauna that could degrade or off-gas over time.

    This approach supports long-term performance and helps ensure the air you’re breathing inside the sauna remains clean.

  • Timber choice has a direct impact on comfort and durability inside a sauna.

    We favour thermally modified timbers such as thermo aspen for internal linings and benches. These timbers contain minimal natural resin, remain stable in heat and humidity, and stay comfortable to touch at high temperatures. Their stability reduces movement, splitting, and long-term maintenance.

  • Insulation plays a key role in heat performance and longevity, supporting faster heat-up times, more even temperatures, and reduced energy use.

    We use 100% sheep’s wool without polymer binders. This provides effective thermal performance while avoiding synthetic binders that can degrade or emit odours under sustained heat.

  • Sauna floors must be safe, durable, and easy to maintain.

    Doon saunas use hard-wearing porcelain floor tiles with appropriate slip resistance, paired with stainless steel drainage. This combination provides good grip underfoot, straightforward cleaning, and long-term durability in wet, high-use environments.

  • Discreet downlighting is concealed beneath the benches, casting a soft, indirect glow across the floor and lower walls. This approach avoids harsh overhead light, instead creating a quieter and more composed interior atmosphere.

  • Large-format windows create a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape, bringing in natural light and a sense of openness while maintaining a calm, enclosed interior. Carefully specified glazing ensures thermal performance and durability, allowing the sauna to retain heat efficiently while framing clear, uninterrupted views.
