Doon Sauna Design Philosophy
Built Properly, or Not at All
A sauna is one of the most demanding environments a structure can face.
Internally, it operates close to 100°C. Externally, it must withstand cold, moisture, wind and seasonal movement. Few buildings are exposed to such extremes so consistently.
This is why saunas reveal shortcuts quickly. Materials fail. Air stagnates. Heat becomes uneven. What begins as a beautiful object turns into something uncomfortable, short-lived, or both.
At Doon, quality is not an aesthetic choice. It is a technical requirement.
Materials that respect heat
Every material inside our saunas is chosen for how it behaves under sustained heat, not how it performs on paper. We insulate exclusively with 100% natural sheep’s wool. It regulates moisture naturally, remains stable over time, and allows the structure to breathe.
Inside the sauna envelope we use absolutely no glues, resins, silicones, or synthetic sealants. This removes any risk of off-gassing at operating temperatures. The air remains clean, dry and neutral, even during long sessions at full heat.
Stable openings, built to last
Doors and windows are handmade from Accoya. Chosen for its exceptional dimensional stability, Accoya is one of the few timbers that performs reliably through repeated heat cycles and carries a 50-year warranty. Frames stay true. Seals remain tight. Nothing drifts, swells, or creeps over time.
Interiors designed for comfort, not compromise
Interiors are lined in thermo-treated aspen, a material valued for its low resin content, stability and calm tactility at high temperatures. It ages quietly and evenly, without bleeding or movement.
Bench heights are meticulously set to position bathers high in the optimal heat zone, where temperature is consistent and circulation is balanced. This creates a softer, deeper heat and a more comfortable session from the first minute to the last.
Ventilation as part of the structure
Ventilation is designed as an integrated system. Fresh air enters low, moves naturally through the heat source and exits cleanly without drafts or dead zones. Oxygen levels remain high, heat remains even and the room never feels heavy or stagnant.
The result
Handcrafted IKI stoves provide generous stone mass and soft, enveloping steam. Subtle downlighting beneath benches and concealed backrest uplighting add warmth without visual distraction.
Nothing is overstated. Nothing is left exposed.
When a sauna is built properly, the quality isn’t announced. It’s felt.
